Needle-free emergency adrenaline available as 1mg nasal spray for children
The needle-free nasal adrenaline spray EURneffy1mg is available from today in the UK for the emergency treatment of anaphylaxis in children aged four years and over who weigh between 15 and 30 kg.
It can be used as an emergency treatment of serious allergic reactions caused by insect stings or bites, foods, medicinal products, other allergens, idiopathic (of unknown cause) or exercise-induced anaphylaxis.
Anaphylaxis, the severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction, develops rapidly and requires immediate treatment. NHS data shows more than 1,700 hospital admissions in a single year related to childhood anaphylaxis..
For families caring for a child at risk of anaphylaxis, the possibility of a severe allergic reaction can create a considerable emotional burden.
This announcement follows the recent Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Authority (MHRA) authorisation of the 1 mg nasal adrenaline spray which widens treatment options for children at risk of anaphylaxis.
Amena Warner, our Head of Clinical Services, says,
Living with the risk of anaphylaxis can have a profound impact on everyday life. Parents and caregivers know that a severe allergic reaction can happen without warning, so it is essential to always carry emergency medication and be prepared to act quickly.
Last summer we saw the option of a needle-free adrenaline device become available in the form of the EURneffy 2mg nasal adrenaline spray, offering adults and children over 30 kg an alternative to adrenaline auto-injectors.
We are pleased that nasal adrenaline spray is now available for use in younger children in a 1 mg dose. The option of a much smaller needle-free device offers choice and may increase the likelihood the adrenaline being carried and used in an emergency.
