Eczema in Children

Back to Eczema Page

Eczema is a chronic skin condition that can affect people of all ages, but it’s most common in infants and children, affecting 1 in 5 children and 1 in 10 adults in the UK. The condition often stems from a mix of genetic and environmental factors. Children with a family history of allergies like asthma or hay fever are more likely to develop atopic eczema.

When eczema appears in the first few months of life and is moderate to severe, there may be a higher risk of developing a food allergy. However, it is not recommended to cut out foods from your child’s diet without medical guidance, as this can lead to nutritional deficiencies and may not be the cause of your child’s eczema.

If you feel a food is worsening your child’s eczema, even if they are only consuming milk, speak with your GP. They can assess whether a referral to an allergist or a joint dermatology and allergy service is needed for further evaluation and care.

At around three months old, it was so bad we were hospitalised to help manage it. At this point, Lucy had various blood tests, which showed us she had IgE allergies to dairy, eggs and nuts.
