Health and Well-being: Navigating Allergies and Mental Health
In today’s world, conversations about mental well-being often highlight the link between a healthy mind and a healthy body. Today, we mark International Mental Body and Wellness Day, which emphasises this vital connection.
For those living with allergies, mental health challenges are an integral part of daily life. Whether it’s the anxiety that comes with every bite for those with food allergies, the self-esteem issues tied to skin allergies, or the exhaustion, isolation, and sleepless nights caused by respiratory allergies, caring for mental health is just as essential as caring for physical health.
Yet, despite this well-known connection, why is it still so difficult for people with allergies to access the mental health support they need?
A recent survey of our community revealed that only 6% of those who feel they need mental health support are able to access it. This is simply not good enough.
As we continue discussions with government officials and the NHS about allergy care provision, we are committed to reminding decision-makers of this critical unmet need. Everyone living with allergies should have access to the mental health support they require.
In the meantime, we’re here to help. Our website offers resources to support anyone dealing with the mental health impacts of allergies. While these aren’t a perfect substitute for professional mental health services, they’re a start. And don’t forget, our Helpline team is always available to offer practical advice, a listening ear, and reassurance that you are not alone.
Health and Well-being, Social Media and Bullying
Teenage years are notoriously hard for children and parents. Battling hormones, along with managing their condition, can impact their mental health. It is important to make sure you continue to talk to your child about their feelings and their condition, giving them a safe space to open up if something is troubling them. Encourage your child to talk, often as they are trying to navigate their new independence, they need a listening ear in order to make sense of the world.
Anxiety in Children
Managing allergies in children often involves addressing associated anxiety, which can impact their daily lives and overall well-being. This resource delves into the cycle of anxiety, offering insights into how thoughts, behaviours, and feelings interconnect when coping with allergies. It provides practical strategies to manage physical symptoms of anxiety and emphasises the importance of balanced thinking and gradual exposure to anxiety triggers.
By utilising this resource, parents and caregivers can better support their children in navigating the challenges of living with allergies, fostering resilience and confidence in managing their condition.
