Schools Allergy Fund

Welcome to the Schools Allergy Fund. This has been made possible through the partnership of Allergy UK, The Allergy Team and Benedict Blythe Foundation

Every child deserves to feel safe at school, yet for thousands of children with severe allergies, this is not always the case. The Schools Allergy Fund, a collaborative initiative by Allergy UK, The Allergy Team and the Benedict Blythe Foundation, is addressing this urgent issue head-on by removing financial barriers that prevent schools from accessing life-saving allergy training and support. Our Fund exists to provide equitable access to essential training, empowering schools to create safer and allergy inclusive school.

We will support and enable schools to implement best practices in allergy management and prevention, ensuring that no child is left vulnerable because of their allergy.

Aim of the Schools Allergy Fund

The aim of the fund is to enable primary schools in England to achieve excellence in managing allergies by funding expert support and training. Schools who would otherwise find the costs involved prohibitive are invited to apply.

Through this initiative, we seek to:

  • Alleviate inequity through financial strain on providing the opportunity for the school to join the Schools Allergy Register
  • Promote inclusion by ensuring that all children, regardless of background, have access to safe environments
  • Drive awareness and education, to manage allergies effectively.
  • Create lasting impact by advocating for improved policies, awareness and a safe environment for children.

By investing in this Fund, we are investing in a future where every child with allergies can learn and thrive without fear.

What does the fund cover?

The Schools Allergy Access Fund pays for each school to work with The Allergy Team for two years. During this time they will receive expert mentoring, support with creating policies and effective whole-school procedures, allergy training for all staff and ongoing access to allergy-related resources and events. Once the school has been assessed as implementing best practice it receives the Schools Allergy Register trust mark and is added to a publicly available Register. A school is considered to be implementing best practice when it meets the criteria laid out in the Schools Allergy Code.

What is the benefit to schools?

Schools who have joined the Schools Allergy Register says it has transformed the culture in their school to be a confident, allergy aware environment. It builds confidence for staff and parents, and children are safer and more included as a result.

Allergic disease is the most common chronic medical condition in UK children, affecting 1-2 pupils in every class. 58% of children with food allergies have experienced a reaction or near-miss at school and anaphylaxis due to food allergy occurs more frequently in schools than in any other setting. Despite this, two-thirds of teachers have not received allergy or anaphylaxis training and 40% do not feel confident managing allergic reactions.

Joining the Schools Allergy Register has multiple benefits including:

  • Reducing the risk of potentially fatal allergic reactions.
  • Building staff confidence to act quickly and effectively in an emergency.
  • Promoting wellbeing and inclusion and reducing pupil and parent/carer anxiety.

It feels like every email, phone call and virtual meeting has improved my personal understanding of allergy management and has consequently made us a safer school for everyone.  – School in Cambridge

What commitment is required from the School?

The school needs to be committed to work with The Allergy Team to implement the criteria as set out in the Schools Allergy Code. They will be given resources, mentoring and support to do this however it will require energy from the school to drive it through.

We aim to add schools to the Schools Allergy Register within 3 months. The input of time required depends on what schools already have in place. Schools need to have two spare adrenaline pens to adhere to the Schools Allergy Register. Where the cost of these is a barrier to joining the administrators of the scheme will consider funding.
