Richie’s fundraising story - #ItsAllAbout40

Allergy UK supporter Richie turns 40 this year and is marking the occasion with 40 incredible fundraising activities throughout the year 2020 to raise money for Allergy UK. As a keen runner, Richie has designed a daring calendar of running events for himself and his family to challenge themselves.

Richie’s son Kodie is five years old and was diagnosed with a peanut allergy aged three following a severe reaction at a family party. Prior to this, the family had no history of allergy and this diagnosis has brought about a huge change in their lives. For this reason, Richie is supporting the work that we do in raising awareness of allergic disease and supporting families living with allergy.

Richie says “Following Kodie’s scary diagnosis our lives have changed so much, and we are really grateful as a family to have Allergy UK here to help us to understand how best to cope with the situation. Our family wanted to give something back, and we have many events lined up, with every one of us taking part in some way. I'm a regular runner so I knew I needed to raise a few eyebrows among my friends when I let them know what I was doing. Celebrating my 40th year with 40 events is going to be the toughest thing I have ever taken on, given last year I raced in 15 events and I thought that was a lot!”

During 2020, the London Marathon and Great North Run both turn 40 as well, and Richie will be running both iconic events to mark his own 40th birthday year.  As a Tesco manager, he will also be running the equivalent of FOUR marathons in four days, running between 40 Tesco stores in Kent… #ItsAllAbout40!

And to finish the year, Richie will be taking on his longest run yet, a 40-mile event in December. The whole family are getting involved in the challenges too, with Kodie’s mum Liz signed up for several races, Kodie’s older brothers taking on Snowdon in the summer, and Kodie leading a fun run with his classmates.

“I am already finding it demanding both physically and mentally, but knowing why I am doing it, I wear my Allergy UK vest with pride, and dig deep each time I take on an event. With 7 marathons and a 40-mile run planned, I know this is going to be very hard, but I'm set on raising a large amount of money in 2020!"

We want to say a huge thank you to Richie for choosing to support Allergy UK. We will be sharing updates on his running challenges over 2020 so you can get involved with his events and donate to his campaign. Keep up with Richie’s training updates on Instagram.

If you are feeling inspired by Richie’s amazing fundraising efforts, why not sign up to an Allergy UK event and challenge yourself to raise money and help us support other families like Richie’s.
