Allergy UK chosen as a local cause in Co-op Local Community Fund
Allergy UK, the leading national charity for people living with allergic disease, has been chosen to receive funding from the Co-op in their Local Community Fund scheme.
Through the Co-op’s Local Community Fund, each time members shop at the Co-op, 1% of what they spend on selected own-brand products and services is donated to their chosen cause to help fund vital charity projects.
As a newly appointed cause in this scheme, donations for Allergy UK from Co-op members will go toward providing support for people living with allergy.
Allergic disease can be associated with feelings of isolation and anxiety. Earlier this month Allergy UK collaborated with the national charity Over the Wall to provide a free-to-attend activity camp for children living with complex allergy and their families. This residential camp was specifically designed to promote inclusion and allow campers to gain confidence and self-esteem.
Mariken’s family attended Over the Wall’s allergy camp and were able to relax and enjoy the weekend because of the way the camp was organised with allergen-free food and medical care on site. Mariken says:
“Our son Henry is severely allergic to peanuts and tree nuts, even traces in food or contact with nuts can result in him going into life-threatening anaphylaxis. He is also unable to eat soya and other legumes. While as a family we like to have adventures and make sure that Henry and his brother get to experience as many things as they can, we need to be vigilant with Henry’s environment and food at all times. When we are outside the house we are cautious as to what he comes into contact with.”
Allergy UK relies on vital donations in order to continue to support families like Mariken’s through initiatives such as Over the Wall’s allergy camp. Through Co-op member donations the charity can fund places for future campers as well as continue its work educating, informing and supporting everyone living with allergy.
