Allergy UK on the inquest of Owen Carey
Allergy UK would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the family of Owen Carey who died of fatal anaphylaxis after eating a meal containing dairy in 2017. At today’s inquest the assistant coroner highlighted the lack of allergen information provided, in spite of the fact that Owen informed staff of his dairy allergy.
As the leading patient organisation for allergic disease we are very aware of the gaps in knowledge and understanding of allergy and the consequences of this for the allergic community. Sadly, it takes tragic incidents like this one to bring home the message that allergies can kill. It is only through education and action, by developing the robust policies and practices that will help prevent further tragedies. As a charity we are committed to increasing awareness of allergic disease, with better understanding of how allergy can be life threatening.
