Participation in the Aspartame Study

The National Allergy Strategy Group

Some individuals report adverse effects which they relate to the consumption of aspartame. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) is undertaking a double blind placebo controlled study to investigate these effects. The study started in July 2009 and is expected to take 18 months. They hope to publish the results early in 2011.

There is further information about the study on their website:

For this study to be successful we need to recruit volunteers who believe they have suffered an adverse effect following consumption of aspartame. If you think you may be able to help us I would like to encourage you to take part in the study. Please email us aspartame@foodstandards.gsi.gov.uk

The research will take place at University of Hull and all appropriate participant travel costs and if necessary overnight accommodation expenses will be met by the Food Standards Agency.

A patient information sheet is also available to download for your consideration and should you have any more questions please contact the research team at Hull University on 01482 675387. They are more than happy to answer any questions you may have.
