Workshops for parents of allergic children are to be launched this November by national charity Action Against Allergy in association with the Children’s Allergy Service at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, London.
Dates for the first three workshops have been announced. They will take place at St Thomas’ Hospital on November 8, November 29 and January 17 and in each case will be held in the evenings to allow parents to arrange babysitters since the events are for adults only.
There will be a central theme for each workshop, respectively food allergy, eczema and asthma, with talks by consultant paediatric allergy specialists, clinical nurse specialists and dietitians from the Trust’s Children’s Allergy Service, all of whom are donating their time without charge to the project. Each two-hour programme will include time for interactive discussion of parents’ specific questions.
At the Food Allergy workshop on November 8, Prof Gideon Lack, Head of the Children’s Allergy Service, with Dr Adam Fox, consultant paediatric allergist and Roisin Fitzsimons, clinical nurse specialist, will talk about basic food allergy problems and treatments, use of the Epipen and management of allergy when children go to school. The parent’s perspective will be presented by author Alice Sherwood, mother of a severely allergic son. The full programme can be seen on www.actionagainstallergyworkshops.org.
A place at each workshop costs £10 and can be booked with Action Against Allergy by going on the web, by phone to 020 8892 4949 (1000-1700 hrs Wed.-Fri) or by mail to AAA at the address below.
