Allergies

Allergies are very common and about one in three people can be affected by an allergy at some point in their life, with symptoms ranging from irritating sneezing or a rash through to potentially fatal anaphylaxis.

Why do we suffer?

An allergy is a reaction of your immune system to a substance known as an allergen which is generally harmless and does not bother most people. Reactions can have one or many symptoms including asthma, sneezing, itching, rashes, and runny noses. Some common allergens are -

  • Pollen
  • Dust mites
  • Mould
  • Pets
  • Food
  • Insect stings and bites
  • Medicines

What is causing this?

The immune system wrongly recognises the allergen to be a threat, and makes antibodies to destroy it. It is the release of chemicals when the antibodies meet the allergens which cause the symptoms of an allergic reaction. Where the allergic reaction takes place depends on how you came into contact with the allergen. Contact may be with your skin, or with the lining of your lungs, mouth, throat, stomach or intestine.

"I cannot praise the service enough. The pharmacist was really informative and the
information received from Allergy UK was brilliant, there was lots of information I didn't know about and am grateful to you for the information supplied. I now use nasal sprays which are helping to make me feel a lot better".
