Keep toys that are not in current use away in a toy chest or cupboard.
Soft toys should be washed with non-bio washing powder/liquid or washing powder/liquid suitable for sensitive skin at over 56 degrees or put in the freezer overnight and then washed at a lower temperature. Once washed and dried store in a plastic bag out of reach of children.
With a favourite toy make sure that it is washed as above on a weekly basis. This avoids the housedust mite building up.
Do not have soft toys sitting on the bed.
Window:
Keep the room well ventilated.
Have the window slightly open at night.
Close window early morning and early evening in the pollen season.
Air the room in the morning by opening the window wider.
Curtains:
Wash curtains every three months at temperature of 56 degrees or above using non-bio washing powder/liquid or washing powder/liquid suitable for sensitive skin.
Consider using a roller blind instead of curtains.
Building Blocks:
Wipe all plastic surfaces with a damp cloth daily.
Pictures:
Try not to have pictures or posters as they hold dust.
Walls:
Use quick drying water based paint or low odour paint.
Make sure that children are not in the room while decorating.
Air the room thoroughly before letting children return to sleep in the room.
Bed/Cot:
Cover duvets and pillows with anti-allergy bedding covers.
Encase the mattress in barrier cover.
Wash all bed linen weekly at 60 degrees using non-bio washing powder/liquid or washing powder/liquid suitable for sensitive skin to kill mites and their allergens.
Wipe the barrier covers with a damp cloth when changing the bed.
Use cotton sheets.
Every three months wash the duvet and pillows.
Do not have soft toys sitting on the bed.
Wipe tops and slats of cot with damp cloth.
Wipe furniture with a damp cloth daily.
Floor:
Vacuum daily but do not have children in the room at the time.
Allow time (at least 3 - 4 hours) for dust to settle before letting children back into the room.
Choose a cot/bed where the vacuum cleaner can go underneath.
If you have wooden flooring and mats, use cotton rugs which can be washed.
Lampshade:
Choose a lampshade that can be wiped. Fabric lampshades can hold the dust.
Wash at over 56 degrees using non-bio washing powder/liquid or washing powder/liquid suitable for sensitive skin.
