Scotland Allergy Services

Allergy UK, are working with nurses trained by Allergy UK's Clinical Director in Scotland. We are continually working towards being able to deliver credible and affordable allergy diagnosis for patients who may not have had access to local services in the past. All nurses have to go through extensive training in order to deliver this service.

What will happen when I attend the allergy clinic?

Firstly you will sit and talk with the specially trained nurse who will take your full clinical history. As part of the history the nurse will ask you a range of questions about your symptoms, general health, diet, home and work. All of these are important factors when assessing the type of allergen that could be triggering your reactions and in deciding the appropriate test or clinical route that is right for you.

What is the cost?

Please contact your nearest clinic who will be able to advise you of the cost.

Why should I have an allergy test?

An allergy test may be used if necessary to confirm the diagnosis made from the clinical history and it also gives an indication of the level of reaction that is happening. It allows the nurse to provide you with the best possible advice for your individual situation.

What sort of test will I have?

Once the clinical history has been taken your nurse will discuss with you whether she feels that a blood test or a skin prick test is the most appropriate test to confirm the substance that is causing your reactions.

What happens during the allergy test?

A skin prick test is not painful this does not draw blood and is perfectly safe. From the clinical history the nurse will have a clear indication of the allergen/s that are the possible triggers and a small drop of this allergen will be used. If a red mark appears, this is measured and the nurse will give you appropriate advice on avoidance and management of the allergy identified. Blood testing will on occasions be used

What happens after I have the allergy tests?

Most allergy can be dealt with through good management, medication and avoidance. Allergy UK will give you advice and information plus, with your permission, one year's free membership to Allergy UK who will provide you with all the information and support that you will need in the coming year.

If the nurse feels that your allergy is complex it may be suggested that you should be referred to an allergy specialist.

In some cases the clinical history will indicate that the symptoms are not due to allergy but to a sensitivity, again advice and support will be given through Allergy UK.
